"Self-Love and Protective Laws: Keys to Breaking the Cycle of Violence Against Women"
Self-love is not a luxury or a whim, it is a right, it is the basis for recognizing that we deserve: respect, dignity and a life free from violence.
As a lawyer and a woman, I have seen how the laws can be both a shield and a light and guide. for those who feel they have lost control over their lives.
In Guatemala, the Law against Femicide and other Forms of Violence against Women (Decree 22-2008) is one of those tools that allows women to claim their right to a life free of abuse.
The importance of identifying ABUSE
Abuse doesn't always begin with physical violence. It can manifest as hurtful words, financial control, emotional manipulation, or isolation from loved ones. This cycle gradually erodes self-esteem until the victim comes to believe that the abuse is their fault or that they have no way out of the situation.
This is where the law plays an important role. In Guatemala, the legal framework recognizes that violence against women is not limited to the physical sphere. According to Article 3 of Decree 22-2008, psychological, sexual, physical, and economic violence are also forms of abuse that deserve to be reported.
Identifying these patterns of violence is the first step towards freedom.
Ask yourself:
- Are you being isolated from your family and friends?
- Do they make you feel less capable or guilty about everything?
- Does he insult you?
- Do they monitor or check your cell phone or social media?
- Are you taking your money away?
- Does he force you to perform sexual acts that you don't want to?
- Do you feel you have to "walk carefully" to avoid conflicts?
Answering yes to any of these questions may be a sign that you are facing a form of violence.
Self-love as the first step towards action.
Self-love isn't just about loving yourself more, but about acting in your own best interest, standing up for yourself, and seeking help when you need it. It's recognizing that no one, absolutely no one, has the right to hurt you, belittle you, or control you.
If you find yourself in an abusive situation, the law in Guatemala provides you with tools such as:
1. Immediate protection measures : You can request support from the authorities to guarantee your safety and that of your children.
2. Public Prosecutor's Office Panic Button
3. Confidential complaints : You can file your case at any court, prosecutor's office or National Civil Police station, even anonymously if you fear reprisals.
It's important to remember that seeking help is not an act of weakness; it's an act of self-love. Speaking out, reporting abuse, and taking legal action are acts of courage that break the cycle of abuse and send a powerful message: you deserve to live without fear .
Guatemala has a long way to go in terms of the comprehensive protection of women, but every woman who raises her voice is helping to build a more just society.
If you're reading this and it resonates with you, I want you to know something: your life, your peace, and your happiness matter. Loving others is important, but never more important than loving yourself.
Self-love is the driving force to leave abuse behind, and the Law against Violence against Women is an ally that supports you on the path to a dignified life.
