NUEVO AÑO, NUEVA OPORTUNIDAD: ROMPIENDO EL CICLO DE LA VIOLENCIA

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITY: BREAKING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE

The start of a new year symbolizes hope and the possibility of a fresh start. For many women experiencing violence, this time can be an opportunity to make courageous decisions and transform their lives. If you are in a relationship that puts your physical, emotional, or psychological well-being, or that of your children, at risk, now is the time to prioritize yourself and seek help.

Here are some tips if you or someone you know is a victim:

1.    Recognizing the Cycle of Violence

Gender-based violence doesn't always begin in obvious ways. It can manifest as hurtful words, control over your decisions, or isolation from loved ones. This pattern tends to escalate if it isn't broken in time. Identifying the signs is the first step to protecting yourself.

2.    Your Right to Live Free from Violence

It is important to remember that the law protects you. In Guatemala, the Law to Prevent, Punish, and Eradicate Domestic Violence, Decree 97-96 of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, protects women from any type of aggression, whether physical, emotional, economic, or sexual. If you are in danger, you have the right to go to the authorities to obtain protective measures.

3.    The Value of Asking for Help

Often, fear and shame keep us silent, but asking for help is an act of strength, not weakness. Seeking support from trusted individuals or specialized institutions can save your life or the lives of your children.

4.    Rewriting Your History

A new year brings the opportunity to rewrite your story. You may feel fear or uncertainty, but you can also embrace hope. Surround yourself with empowering people, set clear goals, and remember that self-love is the best gift you can give yourself.

In 2025, allow yourself to blossom. Life can be difficult, but it is also full of second chances and moments where inner strength becomes the foundation for building a future free from violence and filled with peace.

5.    WHERE CAN I FILE A COMPLAINT?
