Scientists manage to reverse baldness with gene therapy without surgery
What seemed like a distant promise has finally materialized: a non-surgical genetic treatment that reverses baldness in men and women in just 6 weeks.
Hair loss is an aesthetic and emotional concern for millions of people. Until now, options were limited: treatments of dubious effectiveness or invasive surgical procedures. But a recent scientific breakthrough is changing the landscape: a topical gene therapy has been shown to reverse baldness without the need for surgery .
Developed by a group of South Korean researchers, the treatment consists of a lotion that uses CRISPR-Cas13 technology to modify the gene expression of hair follicles. This editing silences the inhibitory genes that block hair growth, reactivating follicles that had entered a permanent resting phase.
The most revolutionary aspect is its application: it requires no injections or surgical procedures . It is a topical treatment, easy to apply, and with no significant adverse effects according to published clinical trials. In more than 90% of patients, a significant recovery of hair density was observed in less than two months , with stable long-term results.
This advancement has a huge impact, especially for women, who are often excluded from surgical treatments due to the diffuse nature of their hair loss. Furthermore, it represents an accessible and less stigmatizing alternative to traditional solutions.
Scientists are now optimizing versions for other types of alopecia, including areata and cicatricial alopecia. In the not-too-distant future, we could see genetics restore not only our hair, but also our confidence and self-esteem.
