The Mathile Institute and Food for the Hungry Guatemala sign an alliance to improve child nutrition in Alta Verapaz
Guatemala City, May 2025 – In a decisive step towards strengthening food security in Guatemala, The Mathile Institute and Food for the Hungry Guatemala have formalized a strategic alliance by signing a cooperation agreement, with the purpose of promoting child development and contributing to the reduction of chronic malnutrition in communities in the department of Alta Verapaz.
As part of this collaboration, the use of Chispuditos®, a nutritional supplement developed by The Mathile Institute, will be implemented. Chispuditos provides 21 essential micronutrients in a scientifically backed formula. This nutritional solution has been carefully designed to promote the growth and comprehensive development of infants and young children from six months of age, offering appropriate and balanced nutrition aligned with the key needs of early childhood.
Within the framework of the project “Transforming Community Systems for Better Food and Nutritional Security,” Food for the Hungry will lead actions focused on strengthening community capacities, economic empowerment, and improving child nutrition. Through direct work with families, community leaders, and organized groups, comprehensive strategies will be implemented to promote local food production and nutrition education, with the goal of building more resilient and food-secure communities.
“The goal of this alliance is clear: to strengthen child development and provide new generations with greater opportunities for growth and well-being, because we believe in the power of nutrition to transform lives and communities,” said Lisa Villanueva, a child nutrition expert at The Mathile Institute.
For her part, Angélica Villatoro, The National Director of Food for the Hungry Guatemala emphasized: "Child malnutrition remains one of the country's most urgent challenges. Through this collaboration, we will reach more than 150 children in the communities of Sehaquiba, Purah, and Sacampana, in the municipality of San Juan Chamelco, contributing to improving their nutritional status and their future."
The action plan includes the distribution of Chispuditos®, training for Food for the Hungry technical staff, cooking sessions with community mothers, and awareness-raising activities on the proper use of the product, promoting sustainable community appropriation.
With this alliance, both organizations reaffirm their commitment to working together for the well-being of Guatemalan children, promoting comprehensive and sustainable solutions that guarantee a dignified life and a future with more opportunities for all.
