What you didn't know about Down Syndrome
A project to promote inclusion and diversity
Guatemala, February 2025 - From a mother's deep love and the desire to build a more inclusive world, "What You Didn't Know About Down Syndrome" was born, a project that Denisse de Pellecer has been promoting since 2019 in honor of her son Mateo.
As the mother of a child with Down syndrome, Denisse has set herself the mission of educating, raising awareness and opening hearts; inviting Guatemalan society to see beyond a diagnosis and recognize the value, joy and ability of those who live with this condition.
In the context of World Down Syndrome Day, which is commemorated on March 21, “What You Didn’t Know About Down Syndrome” will carry out a series of activities designed to inspire, educate and promote inclusion.
Scheduled activities:
· "Ask Me" Photo Exhibition: which will take place from March 20 to 23 at Vidére Shopping Center, Zone 15; Visitors will be able to enjoy an emotional photographic exhibition that highlights the faces of people with Down Syndrome, accompanied by messages that invite reflection on inclusion and diversity.
In addition, on Friday the 22nd at 5 pm, a special video featuring the highlights from the commercial will be shown for the first time on the giant screen.
· Inclusive market: During the same days, a market will be held in Vidére, where entrepreneurs with disabilities and/or their families will offer handcrafted products and share their success stories; demonstrating the importance of their autonomy and showcasing their multiple talents.
· Light Up for Down Syndrome: On March 21, starting at 7 p.m., several iconic buildings in Guatemala City will be illuminated to show their support for Down Syndrome. Participating locations include the facades of Cayalá, McDonald's restaurants, the Banco Industrial towers, the Torre del Reformador, and the EGGSA building. This symbolic action aims to highlight their commitment to inclusion.
· Storytelling Tour: “ Mateo and His Star” is a children's story written by Denisse de Pellecer to explain Down syndrome to children and how to foster inclusion and respect from an early age. During the month of March, Denisse will be presenting the book at schools, businesses, and shopping centers through various storytelling sessions.
“This initiative seeks to break down myths, raise awareness, and highlight the invaluable contributions of people with Down syndrome to our society. Each event will be an opportunity to learn, share, and celebrate diversity, reminding us that love and empathy are the true driving force for change,” said Denisse de Pellecer.
