What do you still need to do to take better care of yourself?
· On International Self-Care Day, a doctor shares essential habits that can transform your well-being.
Guatemala, July 23, 2025. Celebrating July 24, International Self-Care Day, reminds us that taking care of ourselves should be a daily habit, reinforcing the importance of making well-being a constant priority.
“Much of our well-being depends on the actions we take every day. Simple decisions build the foundation of our physical, mental, and emotional health: how we eat, how we sleep, whether we exercise, and how we manage stress,” explains Dr. Rocío Medina, a physician specializing in clinical nutrition and obesity, and a member of Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board.
Below, we share the specialist's recommendations that can make a difference in your long-term quality of life:
1. Much more than just physical health
Many people associate self-care solely with eating healthy, exercising, or preventing illness. But the concept is much broader. It also involves taking care of your mental and emotional health: getting to know yourself better, setting boundaries, maintaining healthy relationships, and seeking help when needed.
2. Habits make the difference
According to the doctor, small, consistent changes have more impact than drastic, short-lived transformations. Getting enough sleep (both in quantity and quality), eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting routine checkups, maintaining good relationships, and continuing to learn are key strategies for preventing illness and feeling better overall.
3. Nutrition is a key element
Nutrition is a key piece of this puzzle, which also includes hydration, rest, movement, and stress management. Eating well doesn't mean following restrictive diets, but rather ensuring your body receives all the nutrients it needs to function properly.
4. Reviewing your routine can prevent chronic diseases
Problems such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension can be prevented—or controlled—with simple lifestyle changes. “We know that many of these problems are directly related to our habits. By adjusting our routines, we can significantly reduce the risks,” Rocío points out.
Where to begin?
Lack of time is one of the most common excuses. That's why the key is to start small. “Go for a 15-minute walk, swap a snack high in saturated fat, sugar, and sodium for a piece of fruit, or take 10 minutes a day to relax and breathe deeply. The important thing is to start… and stay consistent,” advises the doctor.
As you begin this journey, it's also important to avoid falling into the trap of seeking immediate results or comparing yourself to others. “Self-care is a personal and progressive process. Setting realistic goals and celebrating small victories makes all the difference in building a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle,” Rocío concludes.
