How should we truly love?
Love is one of the deepest and most transformative experiences a human being can have, but also one of the most misunderstood. We grow up with the idea that loving is feeling butterflies in our stomach, that it's a perfect movie story, that it's synonymous with absolute sacrifice or dependence. However, the reality is quite different: truly loving is a conscious act, a daily choice, and a commitment that goes far beyond the emotion of the moment.
To love is not to possess or control, but to respect the other person's freedom. It is to learn to enjoy mutual growth, without expecting the other person to be responsible for our happiness. We often confuse love with neediness, with the fear of loneliness, with the search for validation. But true love is born not from lack, but from fullness. We can only love well when we love ourselves first.
True love also knows how to set boundaries. It's not about tolerating everything, about enduring pain in the name of a misunderstood feeling. To truly love is to recognize that dignity, respect, and inner peace are non-negotiable. It's about knowing when to let go when what you have stops adding value and you need to start anew.
Love is not a fleeting impulse; it's a decision cultivated with patience, communication, and everyday gestures. It's about being there in difficult times, not just happy ones. It's having the humility to acknowledge mistakes and the courage to correct them. It's choosing love each day, despite imperfections and storms.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
If we truly want to love, we must begin by understanding that love is not just emotion, but action. It is commitment, respect, understanding, and a reflection of the best we can give. To love well is not to find someone perfect, but to learn to build together a love worth living for.
