Vacations end. Life doesn't...
Because celebrating is also about caring for life.
Holy Week in Guatemala is tradition, faith, rest, and togetherness. It's a time eagerly awaited by thousands of families seeking to disconnect from their routines, reconnect with loved ones, or experience firsthand the cultural and religious expressions that define us as a people. But it is also, sadly, one of the weeks with the most accidents, losses, and preventable suffering.
Celebrating shouldn't cost us our lives.
Going on a trip, visiting the beach, driving long distances, or simply being at home with the kids requires more than just planning: it requires responsibility . Because amidst the hustle and bustle, the heat, the traffic, or the desire to "disconnect," we often let our guard down precisely when we should be most vigilant.
Every year the same pattern repeats itself: people losing their lives in traffic accidents due to speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol. Children lost on beaches and at resorts for mere seconds of inattention. Drownings, burns, falls, poisonings. And the question is… how long are we going to believe that it won't happen to us?
Some decisions can make all the difference:
If you're going to drive, don't drink . For yourself, for your family, for others.
If you go to the beach, supervise children at all times . The sea doesn't forgive distractions.
Always wear your seatbelt , even for a short journey.
Respect the speed limits. Arriving safely is more important than arriving quickly.
If you're traveling, let someone know your destination and keep an eye on your belongings. Prevention also includes personal safety.
Don't neglect your health : stay hydrated, protect your skin from the sun, and be alert to the symptoms of heatstroke or exhaustion.
Holy Week is sacred, not only because of its spiritual context, but because life itself is sacred.
Celebrating responsibly doesn't diminish the joy. It multiplies it, because it ensures we can return, continue, and share the story.
Don't put your future or that of your loved ones at risk for a moment of recklessness. Vacations are short. Life is not.
"The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." — Proverbs 22:3
