FAFIDESS and Ecofiltro launch “Drops of Change”: a comprehensive program to guarantee access to drinking water and promote future green loans
Guatemala, August 2025. As part of its commitment to sustainable development and social welfare, the FAFIDESS Foundation, in partnership with the social enterprise Ecofiltro, launched the “Drops of Change” program,an initiative aimed at improving access to drinking water in rural and indigenous communities, and which will in turn become the basis for the design of future green loans focused on water solutions.
"At Ecofiltro, we firmly believe in the power of partnerships that transform lives. That's why we are so excited about this collaboration with the FAFIDESS Foundation. Together, we share the commitment to building a healthier, more dignified, and sustainable future for thousands of Guatemalan families. This partnership reinforces our vision of a country where access to safe water is not a privilege, but a right available to everyone..." commented Walter Ramirez, Key Account Manager at Ecofiltro.
Why “Drops of Change”?
In Guatemala, more than 14% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water, a reality that disproportionately affects people living in extreme poverty. Aware of this urgent need, FAFIDESS is promoting this program as a concrete, measurable, and sustainable solution to transform this situation.
What does the program consist of?
The program includes a donation of water filters for every loan of Q75,000 or more granted by FAFIDESS. These filters will be distributed to key community centers such as schools, health centers, nursing homes, and orphanages, directly impacting public health and local development.
“Drops of Change” a platform for green financing
This initiative not only seeks to provide immediate access to drinking water, but also to lay the foundations for the development of specialized green loans, geared towards community-based financial solutions for water and sanitation.
As part of this long-term vision, FAFIDESS is forging a strategic alliance with the international organization WaterEquity, recognized for its innovative approach to social investment related to access to water and sanitation. This collaboration will leverage technical and financial resources to scale the program and generate replicable models for other regions of the country. Through the creation and implementation of green water credits.
Specific goals:
- · Donate at least 500 ecofilters in the first year.
- · To directly impact more than 5,000 people.
- · Implement the program in 12 departments in 24 months.
- · To train 100 community leaders on water and sanitation issues.
- · Reduce gastrointestinal diseases in beneficiary centers by at least 25%.
