March 31st is World Colon Cancer Day, a date that aims to raise awareness among the population about the importance of early detection and prevention of this disease.

The main risk factors for developing this disease are:

·      Family history of colon cancer

·      Polyps in the colon

·      Low fiber and high fat intake

·      Lack of physical activity

·      Overweight or obesity

·      The risk increases after age 50

·      Smoking

This disease can be silent, however we must be alert if warning symptoms appear:

·      Persistent diarrhea or constipation

·      Presence of blood in the stool

·      Persistent abdominal pain

·      Unexplained weight loss

·      Sensation that the bowel does not empty completely

·      Constant tiredness or fatigue

The best way to prevent colon cancer is by having a colonoscopy from the age of 45, maintaining a healthy diet high in fiber, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco.

Prevention is key; cancer is curable if detected early.
