The Miguel Torrebiarte Sohanin Foundation reaffirms its commitment to education and social welfare in Guatemala

Guatemala, October 2025 – The Miguel Torrebiarte Sohanin Foundation (FMTS) continues to make a difference through various initiatives focused on education, holistic development, and improving the quality of life for Guatemalans. Recently, the Ministry of Education, through the Vice Ministry of Extracurricular and Alternative Education, recognized the Foundation for its commitment to extracurricular education in the country.

"This recognition reflects the constant work and dedication that each of our teachers and partners puts into transforming lives. Our commitment to education is unwavering because we believe in the power of opportunity and the talent of every Guatemalan," said Marleny Aquino, Executive Director of FMTS.

Among the recent activities that highlight this commitment is the celebration of Guatemala's 204th anniversary of independence, where students from the Brilliant Lessons program presented folk dances, recitations, dramatizations, and paintings at a civic event held at the Chamber of Industry. These activities not only promote art and culture but also the students' confidence and creativity.

In the area of social development, in partnership with Calzado Cobán, 50 pairs of shoes were donated to children in Los Amates, Izabal. A second donation of 60 pairs of shoes was also made to the Friends of San Antonio Association as part of the Children's Day celebration. Both donations were received with enthusiasm and gratitude by the local communities, who recognized the positive impact of these actions.

In the educational sphere, FMTS continues to strengthen teaching through technology. A strategic alliance with the CONI Association has enabled the equipping of 20 educational centers in Alta Verapaz, benefiting more than 1,500 students. The CONI Association provided the necessary computer equipment and furniture, while the Foundation leads the implementation of the FUNDAMITO educational platform, in addition to providing training, pedagogical support, and technical assistance to ensure the efficient and sustainable use of technological resources.

For four consecutive years, we have worked together with the Emilio Rosales Ponce Mixed Normal Institute, strengthening the areas of communication and language, mathematics and learning skills, highlighting this year the realization of the Knowledge Festival where tribute was paid to Eng. Osmín Jared Vásquez Hernández, for his outstanding educational career.

The ProFuturo program continues to expand its impact, with 89 teachers trained in digital skills during September, benefiting more than 1,600 children in Génova, Flores Costa Cuca, and Chisec, Alta Verapaz. Additionally, 11 teachers in Chisec received specific training on using the platform and technological equipment, integrating new methodologies and digital content for meaningful learning.

In order to promote innovation, the first phase of the Science and Technology Fair began last month, where students from the second cycle of primary school demonstrated their creativity and skills in problem-solving, teamwork and research.

During the inauguration of the Food Bank at the Flores Health Center, Costa Cuca, Quetzaltenango, the FMTS participated by contributing 100 pounds of Incaparina to support the fight against child malnutrition, in collaboration with local institutions dedicated to health and nutrition.

“Each of these initiatives reflects our commitment to building a fairer future, with more opportunities and development for all Guatemalans,” concluded Marleny Aquino, Executive Director of FMTS.
