Las matemáticas: La clave para el éxito en el futuro

Mathematics: The key to future success

Guatemala, March 2025 - In the context of International Mathematics Day, celebrated every March 14, Kumon highlights the importance of this discipline as a fundamental pillar for the development of essential skills that lead to future success.

From problem-solving to critical thinking and decision-making, mathematics is the foundation of many of today's most in-demand professions. Careers such as engineering, economics, technology, and data science require a solid mathematical foundation, but even in creative fields like architecture, music, and design, mathematical principles play a key role.

“Mathematics not only teaches numbers, but also fosters structured thinking and the ability to find efficient solutions, key skills in any professional and personal field in today's world,” says Odeth González, a franchise consultant in Mexico and Central America.

According to the expert, a suitable pedagogical approach is essential for children to develop confidence and skills in mathematics. Programs like the Kumon Method have proven effective in building a solid foundation, allowing students not only to learn mathematics but also to develop self-discipline and autonomy in their learning.

Furthermore, current trends show that the future of employment will be increasingly linked to automation and artificial intelligence, fields that rely heavily on mathematical reasoning. According to the World Economic Forum, 75% of emerging jobs will be related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in the coming years.

On this International Mathematics Day, parents and educators are encouraged to foster an interest in this discipline from an early age. Odeth states that, “ providing children with effective tools and methodologies to learn this subject not only opens doors to better opportunities, but also prepares them to face the challenges of today's world.”

Therefore, the expert offers the following advice to parents to help children and young people develop a positive attitude towards mathematics:

1.     Incorporate mathematics into everyday life and connect it to students' interests: use daily situations like shopping or cooking to teach mathematical concepts in a practical and fun way. Also, show how this discipline is present in technology, sports, music, and other areas that students are passionate about.

2.     Fostering confidence in their abilities: Confidence in learning is key to developing a positive attitude. It's important to avoid negative statements about math, as these can negatively influence a child's perception. Instead, it's recommended to reinforce their achievements, acknowledge their progress, and remind them that with practice and patience they can improve their skills.

3.     Establish a consistent study routine: Regular practice is key to developing mathematical fluency and understanding. Setting a fixed time to study each day, even for a short period, helps reinforce knowledge and make learning a habit. A well-established routine not only improves math performance but also strengthens discipline and a sense of responsibility.

International Women's Day

Likewise, in the context of International Women's Day, also celebrated in March, it is crucial to promote equitable access to mathematics education and the participation of women in STEM fields.

Despite progress, the presence of women in these disciplines remains low. Currently, just over a third of graduates in these areas worldwide are women, and their representation in the sector's workforce does not exceed 28%. This reflects the need to create more spaces and opportunities for girls and young women to develop their talent in mathematics and science without limitations.

“It is essential that we foster girls’ confidence in their mathematical abilities from childhood. We need more female role models in STEM and methodologies that make learning accessible and motivating for everyone. At Kumon, we are proud that more girls and young women are studying through the method, and we hope to continue contributing to more women developing a passion for mathematics ,” said Odeth. She also shared that currently 60% of the students at Kumon Centers in Guatemala are women, and this number is expected to increase.
