Neurohábitos que fomentan un cerebro activo, curioso y motivado

Neurohabits that foster an active, curious, and motivated brain

Guatemala, December 2025 - Today, cognitive skills and adaptability are essential for the academic development of children and adolescents. Kumon highlights the importance of neurohabits : daily practices that stimulate the brain, strengthen autonomy, and build a solid foundation for continuous learning.

The science behind neurohabits

Numerous neuroscience studies have demonstrated that the brain is highly malleable thanks to neuroplasticity , its ability to create and strengthen neural connections through the repetition of a newly learned skill. When children engage in activities such as reading new vocabulary, learning a new language, logical reasoning, self-reflection on errors to correct them, or exercises requiring attention, their brains strengthen the pathways related to concentration, self-control, and problem-solving. This translates into improved academic performance and a greater capacity for adaptation.

According to Odeth González, Kumon Franchise Consultant in Mexico and Central America ,  Incorporating these routines at home helps keep children motivated, curious, with a receptive and constantly growing brain.

The expert also shares that the Kumon Method is based precisely on building habits through daily study, consistent practice, independent work, and personalized progress. These pillars allow students to develop discipline, critical thinking, and a positive attitude toward learning.

Kumon recommends these 10 neurohabits to encourage at home at any age; the first 4 are put into practice through the method:

1.     Short daily study routines (10 to 20 minutes) to strengthen consistency and concentration skills.

2.     Mathematical reasoning exercises , to keep logic and problem-solving active, for example, mental calculation games or mathematical puzzles.

3.     Quiet study environments that promote mindfulness and reduce distractions.

4.     Recognition of effort is key to strengthening internal motivation and a sense of personal achievement.

5.     Logic and strategy games stimulate critical thinking, creativity, and planning. Examples include jigsaw puzzles, chess, and crosswords.

6.     Precision manual activities that enhance fine motor skills and strengthen cognitive connections related to psychomotor coordination and attention, such as construction games, origami, and crafts.

7.     Self-reflection practices and mindfulness exercises help children focus, assess their progress, regulate their emotions, and develop self-control. Examples include conscious breathing, mindfulness exercises, and an emotions journal.

8.     Daily mini-challenges , which activate the brain's reward system and promote perseverance, such as reading one more page of a book, organizing a part of the room, solving a quick logic puzzle and, where applicable, Kumon worksheets.

9.     Guided exploration of interests , such as music, art, or science, that awakens natural curiosity and expands cognitive skills.

10.  Short periods of digital disconnection , to balance stimulation and promote mental rest, for example, doing outdoor activities such as playing a sport, walking, cycling or dedicating time to free reading.

“Neurohabits not only improve academic performance, but also strengthen security, confidence, and autonomy to develop skills in any area. Children learn to enjoy the process and discover what they are capable of achieving ,” concludes Odeth González.
