Discover the Link Between Food and Emotions
World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10, is promoted by the World Federation for Mental Health. According to the WHO, mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables individuals to cope with life's stresses, develop their abilities, learn and work effectively, and integrate into their environment.
While this day aims to raise awareness about mental health issues worldwide, Dr. Nataniel Viuniski, a member of Herbalife's Advisory Board, explains that one way to address this problem is through prevention. In this context, self-care practices become essential, and the relationship between nutrition and mental health is gaining relevance, as diet can influence our psychological well-being and vice versa.
“There is a close relationship between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, often referred to as the second brain. It is estimated that approximately 80% of serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract. This neurotransmitter influences our mood, anxiety, and happiness,” the specialist adds.
In addition, emotions such as sadness, anxiety, and loneliness can have a major impact on eating behavior, leading to increased consumption of foods high in calories, fats, and sugars, which activate the brain's reward system and provide a temporary feeling of comfort and pleasure.
“These foods stimulate the brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for emotions and behaviors, providing an immediate feeling of pleasure. However, this effect is temporary and can lead to a cycle of overconsumption, especially during times of stress. Furthermore, some of them can contribute to increased inflammation in the body, which is associated with a higher risk of depression and cognitive decline,” says Viuniski.
On the other hand, there are several nutrients that positively influence mood. The Herbalife specialist details eight of them below:
- Healthy fats: Omega-3, found in fatty fish such as salmon and sardines, walnuts, flaxseed, and nutritional supplements, is essential for brain health.
- B vitamins: Vitamins B6, B9 (folic acid), and B12 are crucial for the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are related to mood. They are found in lean meats, eggs, leafy greens, and whole grains.
- Magnesium: It is vital for the functioning of the nervous system and contributes to normal muscle function and psychological function. Sources of magnesium include almonds, spinach, and avocado.
- Vitamin D: Important for serotonin production, its deficiency has been associated with mood disorders such as depression. It is obtained from sun exposure, fatty fish, eggs, and fortified foods.
- Tryptophan: An amino acid precursor to serotonin, found in foods such as turkey, eggs, cheese, and nuts, which regulates mood, satiety, and sleep.
- Zinc: Involved in brain function, its consumption has been associated with a lower risk of depression. Good sources of zinc include red meat, seafood, and seeds.
- Antioxidants: Vitamins C and E, and polyphenols protect the brain from oxidative stress and support nervous system function. They are found in citrus fruits, red fruits, and vegetables.
- Complex carbohydrates: Foods such as whole grains and legumes can increase serotonin levels in the brain, promoting a sense of well-being.
