Holiday season: Discover 5 foods to enjoy and 5 to moderate
Guatemala, November 2024. The final weeks of the year are upon us, and you likely already have several plans, outings, and gatherings with your family, friends, and loved ones. While this season offers an opportunity to share special moments, the increased consumption of certain foods can have an undesirable impact.
Dr. Nataniel Viuniski, a nutrition specialist and member of Herbalife's Nutrition Advisory Board, explains that weight gain during these celebrations could become permanent. If body weight continues to increase in the long term, the impact on health could be negative, potentially affecting other aspects of well-being, such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
It's advisable to be mindful of our food choices during the holidays and opt for foods that promote long-term health. Therefore, the Herbalife expert suggests the following five foods to include in your holiday meals:
- Fresh fruits: They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They help support digestive health, control appetite, and maintain a strong immune system.
- Leafy green vegetables: Spinach, chard, and arugula are excellent sources of fiber and micronutrients that contribute to digestive health and balance heavier meals. They are also low in calories and very filling.
- Nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts): These are rich in healthy fats and protein. When eaten in moderation, they help you feel full for longer and are beneficial for cardiovascular health.
- Fatty fish (salmon, tuna): These contain omega-3 fatty acids, essential for heart and brain health. Including these foods can balance the typical fattier meals of the season.
- Drinks made with green tea and guarana: These help increase energy and alertness, promoting a more active state. They are a great alternative to excessive alcohol consumption.
Dr. Viuniski also details five foods that are recommended to be consumed in moderation during the holidays:
- Snack foods: Potato chips, packaged snacks, and foods high in sugar and fat often contain additives that encourage overconsumption. These foods contribute to weight gain and the development of metabolic problems when consumed in excess.
- Sugary and alcoholic drinks: They provide "empty" calories that can be stored as body fat. Furthermore, alcohol interferes with the metabolism of fats and sugars.
- Meat products: Sausages and cold cuts contain high levels of sodium and saturated fats, which increases the risk of hypertension and heart disease.
- Refined sweets and desserts: Cookies, cakes, and other desserts are often full of sugars and unhealthy fats, contributing to weight gain if consumed in excess.
- Fried foods: Fried foods contain large amounts of unhealthy fats. Consuming these types of foods can affect digestion and promote the accumulation of body fat.
