The Sublime Art of Learning to Live

Human life has an expiration date, even though none of us know our own. That's why we could say that the most valuable thing a human being possesses is time. You can't buy time, save it, or transfer it. It's finite. That's why it's important to know how to manage it and enjoy it.

Knowing how to live this finite time is in our genes. A baby knows how to live each moment, each emotion, each sense, each caress with intensity. They scream, cry, kick, and laugh heartily without being influenced by what others think. A child possesses an impressive capacity for wonder, enjoying every bright color in nature, every flavor, every sound. The child lets their senses transmit what the world offers. They have no worries. However, over time we lose that way of living and begin to complicate our lives. Each in their own way.

Life is full of many decisions, both small and large, but all of them are of utmost importance. The choices we make in our lives are largely responsible for how we are living today. If we all had a clear vision of where we wanted to go, the path there would be direct and pleasant. But we get sidetracked by details that appear along the way and that we don't know how to avoid. We take wrong turns and waste time getting back on the path that will lead us to our goal.

That's why it's important that you don't lose perspective in your life, that you don't get distracted from living. Don't let any comment cloud your path to where you want to go. Remember that the way you live and resolve your life will also influence how your children live it. We are their primary role models, from whom they unconsciously learn the art of living.

If you are not currently feeling whole, at peace, and enjoying your life, you could review some basic aspects that are the starting point for regaining your overall health.

  • Physical health:

Remember that you need a balanced diet, daily exercise, and between 6 and 8 hours of restful sleep.

  • Emotional health:

Surround yourself with people who uplift you, not those who bring you down. Boost your self-esteem.

  • Spiritual health:

Nourish your spirit of peace, love, and kindness through moments of silence and reflection.

Some deeper aspects would be:

  • Make decisions with perspective. Not only taking into account your present but also visualizing your future, where you want to go.
  • Write down and hang your goals, objectives, something that excites you and motivates you, somewhere you can see them.
  • Treat yourself as you reach your goals. You can buy your favorite dessert, a nice bookmark, print a photo, or share your achievement with someone who will be happy for you.
  • Remind yourself how important you are as a person, for who you truly are. Never let your worth be based on your career or your family role. No one knows your worth better than you; it should never be based on others.
  • Force yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try new things.
  • Seek out nature, embrace it, breathe it in, fill yourself with it.
  • Practice some art: painting, drawing, singing, dancing, writing or learning to play an instrument.
  • Human beings need a support network. Seek out and find people with whom you can laugh and share without feeling judged or obligated.
  • Find older people and ask them about their lives. Listen, learn, and absorb their wisdom.
  • Practice gratitude. Write thank-you notes, say prayers, and find a reason to be grateful every day.
  • Perform small acts of love. Give a smile, a hug, a word of encouragement.
  • Find balance in what you do. Analyze how you are managing your time and your life priorities.

Finally, remember that we come into this world to live, not just to exist. Reflect, examine, and make the necessary changes to rediscover the joy in your life. Manage the little or much time you have left. We don't know how much, but we do know that we are not eternal; our story in this world will come to an end. That's why knowing how to live is an art we should all practice.
