“Playing at Programming: Technology from Childhood with a Purpose”

Testimonial from Jenniffer Guzmán – Founder of 'Playing to Program'

Hi, I'm Jenniffer Guzmán , a Systems Engineer, passionate about education, and, for the past two years, also a happy mom. I want to share with you the origin of my project: "Playing at Programming ," a book designed to introduce young children to the world of programming in a fun and engaging way.

Ten years ago, I pursued a Diploma in Montessori Education out of curiosity. I didn't know that, some time later, that knowledge would combine with my experience in technology to create something new. At the same time, I also taught at the University of the Valley of Guatemala, my alma mater, while working in the corporate world in various roles: programmer, analyst, database designer, report generator, and finally, product and project manager.

A key moment in my journey was participating in a STEAM educational project for children, where we combined science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with play-based learning methodologies. Although that project didn't continue, it left me with a deep sense of satisfaction and the conviction that technology can be taught from a very young age.

Everything finally clicked when I became a mom. The idea of creating something educational and technological for my daughter began to take shape. That's how Playing to Program was born .

The first volume is titled "Variables and Conditionals ," a large-format book (double letter size, thick spiral binding) that includes six illustrated scenarios for working on these concepts with children from the age of two. It also includes a visual guide for adults , because I firmly believe that support is an essential part of learning.

My daughter was a fundamental part of the process: she tested the prototypes, gave real feedback, and inspired me to bring this idea to fruition. Today, the book is printed and on sale, and it has been received with great interest by parents and educators.

This project not only represents a combination of my professional experience, but also my role as a mother and my passion for education through play and technology.
