Collagen: 10 myths and 10 truths
strong bones.
But, as with many trendy products, a number of beliefs and myths have arisen surrounding collagen that are not always supported by scientific evidence. Talía Pinto, a nutritionist and member of Herbalife's Dietitian Advisory Board and External Nutrition Advisory Board, emphasizes the importance of checking the label and nutritional information of any product before buying it: " It is essential to be informed about the real benefits of collagen and how to maximize its potential for well-being," she states.
In addition, the Herbalife expert then addresses some of the most common myths surrounding collagen, as well as the science-backed benefits this supplement offers:
- Collagen supplements make you gain weight
Myth : Collagen supplements are generally formulated to be low in calories and contain little to no carbohydrates, saturated fats, or cholesterol. However, each supplement will vary in its nutritional content, so it's very important to check the nutrition facts label.
- A diet rich in vitamin C is essential for collagen production
Fact : Consuming a diet rich in foods containing vitamin C can help with the normal production of collagen in the body. This nutrient is necessary for collagen synthesis.
- Plant collagen is the same as animal collagen
Myth : There is no plant-based source of collagen; this component is found exclusively in animal products.
- Collagen helps reduce cellulite
TRUE: Some types of collagen have bioactive peptides that help reduce the visible signs of cellulite and promote the production of procollagen and elastin in the skin.
- Collagen is only for women
Myth: Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is part of the connective tissue that, for example, gives structure to the skin, therefore, it can be consumed by both men and women.
- Collagen is beneficial for skin health
TRUE: Collagen contributes to skin density and elasticity. As we age, the body's collagen production decreases, which can lead to wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.
- Marine collagen is the best
Myth: Marine collagen, derived from fish scales, skin, and other parts, is no better than other collagen sources. The effectiveness of collagen largely depends on its bioavailability—that is, how much of the collagen from the supplement is absorbed. This is why supplements containing hydrolyzed (cut) collagen are more effective, as their bioavailability is higher.
Hydrolyzed (cut) collagen is composed of short chains of amino acids called peptides. By cutting collagen, different peptide patterns are obtained, which are responsible for the new benefits attributed to collagen. These bioactive peptides are what are absorbed, providing the benefit.
- You can't take collagen every day
Myth : Yes, it can be taken every day. However, it is recommended to follow the instructions on the product label.
- Collagen can help in the recovery from injuries
Myth: Although the role of collagen supplementation in the context of sports practice and the prevention/recovery of associated injuries is currently being investigated, the connection between the two has not yet been established.
- All collagen supplements are the same
Myth: There are different types of collagen and various sources of collagen supplements, such as bovine, porcine, marine, and avian collagen. Each type can have different properties and effects on the body.
Finally, the Herbalife expert explains that if you are considering taking collagen supplements, it is advisable to speak with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
