Beyond grades: Tips for building habits in our children
Guatemala, August 2025 - Although grades are usually the main indicator of school performance, education experts agree that the habits children develop in their learning process are what truly generate a permanent impact on their academic and personal development.
“At Kumon, we know that true academic success isn't built solely on good grades, but on habits like consistency, responsibility, independence, and perseverance. These values not only help them perform better in school, but also prepare them to face challenges at any stage of life.” explains Odeth González, Kumon franchise consultant in Mexico and Central America.
How can we encourage these habits at home?
According to Odeth, the family environment plays a key role in children's personal development. “With the right support, it's possible to develop skills that allow them to learn with greater confidence and motivation. Therefore, I want to share five tips so that parents, through simple actions, can be an important guide in shaping their children's habits.”
1. Create a suitable space for studying
Having a quiet, tidy, and distraction-free workspace facilitates concentration, work rhythm, and the development of good study habits. Involving children in organizing their workspace also strengthens their sense of responsibility and commitment to their tasks.
2. Reward effort , not just the result
Valuing discipline more than the grade itself reinforces the importance of habit formation for improved learning. Phrases like "I'm proud of how consistent you were with your assignments" are more effective than focusing solely on 100%.
3. Promote autonomy
Let children take on responsibilities appropriate to their age: packing their backpack, organizing their school supplies, charging their tablet, or starting their homework without reminders. This strengthens their independence and decision-making skills.
4. Lead by example
Children learn more from what they see than from what they are told. Demonstrating consistency and perseverance in your own activities and talking about your personal goals can be a powerful source of inspiration for them.
5. Encourage self-reflection
After completing a task or facing a challenge, encourage them to reflect: What did you learn today? What would you do differently next time? This habit strengthens critical thinking, awareness of their own learning processes, and the desire to improve, beyond just a grade, recognizing that making mistakes is a valuable opportunity to find new solutions, adapt, and improve, rather than seeing it as something negative.
“The Kumon method is designed precisely to foster these values through learning. With a personalized approach and guidance from trained instructors, students progress at their own pace, developing confidence, discipline, and a love of learning,” concludes Odeth González.
